If I’m being sensible, the Civic. (We did get the Si version of that here...)

If I’m doing what I’d probably actually do... the 307 I guess, because it’s something we don’t get.

Oh my... that Ford fell out of the ugly tree and hit every ugly stick on the way down.

It’s like the missing link between the bubble Taurus and the generation previous, with some Audi DNA in there somehow.

The Corolla, in the SC T-Sport trim, can be a wolf in sheepsclothing. I rather WOULDNT the 307, because its really the POS in the list.

The Civic is made in the UK, the 307 is a Peugeot and the Scorpio is the worst car made by Ford ever (which is something to say)

Funny you would call the only car that isn’t trash, trash.

I remember thinking that gen 307 was a nice looking hatchback when they came out. No idea how they drive though. The civic had that great dash-mounted shifter, so it gets my vote.

To be honest the 307 gives me a bit of a double feeling, we inherited one from my grandparents(Dark blue 3 door base-ish model), that car was an utter piece of garbage, full of rattles, all kinds of plastic pieces had snapped off and it had a repeat problem with the rear springs. Mind you it only covered about 67000kms over the course of 10 years with all prescribed maintenance, because old people. It was also extremely underpowered, since it combined the 1.6 with a 4 speed slushbox, sucking all the life out of it.

On the other hand it was the first car I drove, when I was 13/14, which was easy because it was an automatic, so I have a bit of a soft spot for it due to that. And it is not as ugly as the facelifted one, so it’s got that going for it too. We could have kept it as my first car, but I preferred a manual, so we traded it in when buying the Twingo.

For some reason I’ve always liked both the Civic and the Corolla, I actually looked into buying one of them, but I decided I rather bought something newer, lighter and more fuel efficient.

Swindon, UK: The only place in the UK where they build cars properly.

Post 2000 Peugeot

RWD and Cosworth V6, you’re wrong.

Euro Corollas were built in the UK as well.

Post 2000s Peugeot are the worst, they literally fall apart from 0 miles (had one) have you sat in one with over 40k miles?

200 hp Cosworth V6 on a 1600kg RWD car? Sounds pretty brisk.

I actually did not know the Euro Corollas were made in the UK, most of the rest of the World got the Japanese made ones, which are standard Toyota quality.

The Civics were quite decent for being made in the UK, but next to a Japanese made Civic they’re not quite there.

Meanwhile our french built Renault Espace soldiers on at 320k...

It’s like a 528i.

Toyota quality is BS. A 90s Citroën is well built, far more comfortable and has no issues reaching mileages far surpassing the average Toyota (had one).

Japan: That one country that took longer to figure out how to rust-proof a car than the Italians did.

Renault =/= Peugeot, if haven’t had one you don’t know what you’re talking about.

I mean there is this HUGE portion of the World that doesn’t get snow (including Japan) where Japanese cars are kings of reliability.

I have never seen or heard of a Citroen at or anywhere near 1 million miles (closest I could ever find was like 200k+), but there are several million mile (and Near-Million mile) Toyotas and Lexus, your point is completely mute.

Example:

I said average you dipshit. I don’t think the average mileage of a Lexus is 370,000+. Likewise there are numerous examples of various different makes of cars reaching abnormally high mileages, and just like your example they all have one thing in common: Exceptional maintenance and near exclusively highway miles.

“Random 400,000 mile Alfa found on the internet”

Tl;dr: Reliability is relative, maintenance and the type of driving are more important.

Seriously? I’ve owned a 200+k miles (360k km) Citroën myself . The only Citroën I’ve owned. When I sold it, it was good for another few 100k km as long as it got normal maintenance. It had no rust (age:25) and the engine was healthy. Only the rare automatic (ZF!) was a possible Achilles heel. My parents had a similar Citroën back in the late 90s. When they bought it it already had over 200k miles on it.

I will say that Peugeots and Citroëns introduced in the early 2000s (see: 307) had issues. I’d avoid those. However, 90s model Peugeots/Citroëns tend to be quite durable. Especially the 406/Xantia. Ask me how I know... The facelifted versions of the early 00s models were somewhat decent again too. I totally trust a late mk1 Citroën C5 to reach 500k km without too many issues, as long as it’s maintained as it should (true for every car). Too bad it’s so ugly.

Ewww. That hideous Civic started the downward spiral to irrelevance of Honda in Europe. The 307 was a disgrace* to the excellence that were Peugeots from the 90s. The Corolla is a Corolla, and Corollas (and Auris/Auri) send shivers down my spine. Not the good shivers.

I’ll take the Scorpio.

*) I like the wheels though. So much so that I bought a set of those exact 307 wheels for my daily driver.

Has there ever been a good looking Civic apart from the third and fifth gen though? Honda certainly tried immensely hard to compete with the Mercedes A-Class for the highest average age of drivers with these later models though.

I mean I had a Pininfarina 406 and it was shit and wasn’t even past 40k kms, it probably is a case of “your experience may vary” TM, but nearly all 3-4+ year old Peugeots I’ve seen are complete garbage, I have an uncle that has a 2015 car and the front suspension assembly, the actual metal frame part, BENT on a pothole, no damage to anything else... Shit car...

My daily driver is a 406 coupe. Bought it with 167k, it’s at 281k now. Besides normal maintenance (tires, exhaust, belts, brakes,... All only once) zero problems. Well, the outside thermometer (the one in the mirror) has gone bad and needs replacing.

Honestly, these cars are known for their durability. It’s not just my n=1 experience. I don’t know what happened to yours, but it’s out of character.

It was endlessly in and out of the shop for like 2 years for various reasons, sensors, numerous replacement parts (which were incredibly expensive and very long to get here) eventually I got sick of it and got something else.

I know the conditions of my country are probably not suitable for the cars, because over here the opinion is mostly they’re really awful cars; overall the cars are much too delicate and low quality so they break really often; but other European makes have really amazing reputation (I’ve had experience with most) and they’ve been great.

Kinja'd!!! duurtlang > Alex Zapata
10/14/2016 at 14:22

Kinja'd!!!0

You’re in South or Middle America, right? That might change things. These cars are made for our European conditions. Parts are easy (and fast) to get and cheap. I don’t have to deal with potholes. And, like I mentioned, those that know these vehicles do not see them as what you’re describing. Over here that is. Only the ‘ an uncle of the brother of my roommate had a bad Renault in 1965 so all French cars are bad ’ types. And those who had the bad luck of buying, for example, a larger Renault circa 2004 (those were shitty).

In the 114k km I’ve owned my now 16 year old 406 with 281k on the odometer it has never been in the shop for anything other than routine by the book maintenance. Never, not once.
